Description

Out to Play programs are based at the beautiful greenhouses and classroom on Kemptville Campus, which offers a warm, green indoor space in winter, all-gender bathroom, parking and easy drop-off locations.

The 360-acre forest comprises several forest stands, including mixed hardwood, conifer and maple plantations, with community sugar harvesting in the late winter and early spring. Children wander the forest with their educators and may settle into play in the Maple Forest, the Pines, the Sandy Dunes or the Nut Tree Orchard.

About the Program

For children aged 8–12 years, the Wolf Program offers child-centred, inquiry-driven learning, where connection and discovery deepen through play on the land.

Wolf days begin and return often to a warm and connected circle — a time for oral storytelling, sharing books, gathering for meals, and engaging in kind, playful conversation. From there, children head out on a daily hike and are invited into a range of experiences, including art, large loose parts play, and hands-on science investigations.

Time on the land allows for deep, immersive play and the development of wilderness skills. Educators actively participate alongside children — scaffolding learning, supporting thoughtful risk-taking, and guiding children in being safe and kind together.

A unique aspect of the Wolf Program is the integration of project-based learning and skill development. Each day holds space for interest-led exploration, where children can follow their curiosities over time. Past projects have included building bat boxes, whittling puppets and creating puppet shows, constructing bug hotels, planting vegetable gardens, and learning orienteering together.

Families receive a packing list to support their days (including spare clothing, snacks, lunch, and water). Each year includes Out to Play Family Gatherings — a special opportunity to connect with the wider community.

We would love to welcome your family into the Out to Play community.
